Gum disease is becoming increasingly common especially as patients try to cut back amidst the current economic downturn, with dental treatment being one of the first things to be sacrificed. Now Rahul Doshi and Ashish B. Parmar, award-winning cosmetic dentists from Extreme Makeover and Partners at The Perfect Smile Studios & Institute in the South East, are outlining the importance of avoiding gum disease at all costs.
Caused by a build up of plaque, sufferers of gum disease, will get some warning signs, but these will often be ignored as something minor. Plaque build will often result in gum irritation known as gingivae, which is the early stage of gum disease. If this condition is left untreated, the gums can start to move away from the teeth, the bone structures around your teeth can become affected and your teeth can become wobbly. If this process is left untreated for long periods, this could result in your teeth falling out, or having to be removed by your dentist.
Rahul Doshi, the specialist in cosmetic dentistry in London, said, “Teeth whitening and tooth implants are extremely popular at the moment, but the dental industry is finding that the numbers of those coming forward for regular check-ups and treatments such as fillings has hit rock bottom. This is why we are seeing a marked increase in the numbers of patients being diagnosed with gum disease, which is shocking, considering we have one of the best dental systems in Europe.”
Known as the ‘silent disease' as it often produces no symptoms, regular check-ups and regular flossing , will usually keep these unwanted effects at bay. Usually the first sign of gum disease is bleeding gums when you brush your teeth. You may also experience red and swollen gums or even suffer with bad breath- reason enough to have a check up!
Mr Doshi, added, “It surprises me that cosmetic dentistry in London is really taking off, but still people are failing to pay attention to the basics. Procedures like tooth whitening, can often not be carried out if the patient has any tooth decay or has not been for an internal examination for a while, so those seeking to have their teeth whitened should take this into consideration.”
Those who smoke, suffer from diabetes or hormonal changes, are all more likely to develop the disease, similarly, those with unhealthy eating or flossing habits may also be effected. If you are in doubt about the health of your gums, it is advised to visit your dentist or hygienist, who will administer treatment to you. This will usually involve cleaning your teeth thoroughly using a scaler and an electric toothbrush with gritty toothpaste. He or she may also recommend an antiseptic mouthwash, such as chlorhexidine to help prevent plaque forming. They may even teach you how to floss properly.
