In the current economic crisis is it better for the average dental practice to work within the boundaries of the NHS or verge into the unknown waters of
private cosmetic dentistry? As Rahul Doshi and Ashish B. Parmar, award-winning dentist's from Extreme makeover and Partners at The Perfect Smile Studios & Institute in the South East, explain, venturing out into the private sector can be fulfilling both personally and financially.
Mr Doshi, said, “There are a number of dentists that are happy having a large list of patients and working on a ‘conveyor belt system'. However, many of us are doing some private dentistry, or looking at seriously converting the practice to private only. There are a number of proven and defined strategies that can be followed to ensure a successful and profitable conversion to doing private work only.”
Whether you are looking to embark upon a life of private dentistry and add to your list of services including teeth whitening and tooth implants, in order to target that newly found high-end audience effectively or if you are just getting started in private cosmetic dentistry, having a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) is essential!
Mr Doshi added, “The most successful people in history have understood the ‘Law of Attraction'. The ‘Law of Attraction' says that you are a living magnet and that your thoughts create a force field of energy that radiates out from you and attracts back into your life people and circumstances in harmony with them. Any thought you have, combined with an emotion, positive or negative, radiates out from you and attracts back into your life the people, circumstances, ideas and opportunities consistent with it. My best advice is to be completely focused on your desired outcome, that way you will achieve your goals in cosmetic dentistry.”
Mr Doshi added, “It is vital that your work is moulded around your personal life and not the other way around. It is important when starting any new enterprise that you should sit down with your spouse or partner and be true to yourself with regards to what is important. It is then down to you as a couple to communicate with each other about how many days a week you will work, how much income you are hoping to bring in, how many holidays a year you will take and how will you maintain that work-life balance. Only when this is in place can you begin a great new career path with the enthusiasm that it deserves”
Once you personal life has been made a priority, you are well on your way to creating a very successful private cosmetic dentistry practice. To make change happen, you need to create a new vision. Three important areas need to be reviewed. These are, what is your practice identity, what type of dentistry do you want to and what types of people do you want to treat?
If for example you are going to open a cosmetic dentistry practice, then you will not really be able to treat children. Goal setting is so important that only the top three per-cent of the most successful business owners have clearly defined written goals and it is important to bear in mind that when converting an NHS practice to a private practice may require a one to two year game plan with clearly defined and manageable monthly goals. This makes progression easy and helps to minimise the financial risks involved.
Mr Doshi added, “Once all of these factors have been taken into consideration, the next step is to improve the look of your practice, and this need not cost the earth so there is no need to worry!”
There is a common theme for dentists spend thousands of pounds on equipment and fancy gadgets, but often fail to understand that patients will not really perceive the difference.
They will however notice the aesthetic ambience of the Practice, the nice aromatherapy vapour as they enter your premises, the beautiful music playing in the background, the smiling and smartly dressed professional team members. They will also notice the totally clutter free environment, the beautifully appointed washroom with Molton Brown products and the freshly brewed cappuccino when they asked for a coffee. The best way to achieve these finishing-touches is to set yourself a budget and appoint a team of makeover specialist to transform your cosmetic dental practice.
