Worn Teeth
Worn Teeth need a slightly different approach of treatment, prevention of future problems associated with tooth wear is very important. If untreated these worn teeth may:
Become sensitive
Become difficult to restore in the future
Need extensive dentistry which can be prevented
Look short and unaesthetic
An example is Derek. He had teeth that were wearing away. He was also keen to have an improvement to his appearance. We created a new smile with strong, long lasting porcelain crowns.

Worn Teeth: An approach for long term health
The assessment reveals that you have lost a lot of tooth substance through wear. This tooth wear is caused by a number of different reasons such as acid damage (erosion), grinding (tooth to tooth contact i.e. attrition), and lack of back teeth (i.e. increased chewing and function of the front teeth which are not really well designed for this purpose). Once you wear through enamel (which is the strongest substance in the human body!), then you will be in to the softer inner layer called dentine. This will then mean that the teeth will wear down at a faster rate! This can then lead to increased sensitivity and pain, and also create teeth that do not have an attractive appearance (i.e. smaller teeth with an incorrect proportion). The longer this situation is left untreated, the more the treatment will become difficult to treat in the future.
We therefore recommend you consider a definitive and comprehensive approach for the long term rather than a "quick fix" approach. This will involve precise analysis of your teeth and biting pattern. We would need to "open up the bite" in order to gain space between the two jaws so that we can create aesthetic and functional porcelain restorations. The treatment is normally done in stages as follows:
Step 1 Analysis and planning
Step 2 Wearing a deprogramming device (i.e. a small plastic device over the edges of the front teeth to open up the bite (night time wear for a week or so)
Step 3 Recording the new bite and jaw position
Step 4 Creation of laboratory made wax ups (i.e. simulation of the new end result)
Step 5 Testing of this new / improved bite and appearance with a trial set of teeth
Step 6 Fitting of the front porcelain (or similar) laboratory made restoration
Step 7 Fitting of the back porcelain (or similar) laboratory made restorations
Step 8 Creation and fitting of an acrylic (plastic) protective mouth guard for night time wear & protection of your teeth and restorations
Step 9 Checking and making refined bite adjustments using our computerised bite monitoring equipment (T Scan)
Step 10 Maintenance with the Hygienist (every 4-6 months as advised)
There is no obligation to continue treatment but you will have a great opportunity to understand more about your mouth and the possibilities dentistry has to offer you today.
*Any FREE initial consultation will be with our dentist and/or our Treatment Coordinators. The suitability of options discussed will ultimately be dependent upon your clinical assessment with a dentist at the practice.
