An oral surgeon is qualified in a speciality of dentistry that involves surgical corrective procedures.

They are able to perform a myriad of treatments such as extraction of wisdom teeth; removal of broken roots in the jaw; and implant surgery of various kinds. They can also perform reconstructive surgery on jaws that are misaligned due to accidents and trauma. They perform minor and major surgery depending on the patients needs to correct injuries to the face, jaws, mouth and teeth.

They are trained in trauma management and can perform corrective surgery as well as reconstructive surgery and performing apicectomy on failed root fillings. They also perform a wide variety of cosmetic surgical procedures. The abnormalities they treat may be acquired or developmental defects. They often work very closely with other dentists including prosthodontists and Implantologists.

An oral surgeon also can sedate patients so that they are semi-conscious during these surgical procedures.

Their training is rigorous and involves the undergraduate dental degree as well as a postgraduate doctoral surgical training in a hospital-based residency program.
