Orthodontic Treatment is a great way of straightening teeth that are misaligned or in the incorrect position. You will need to have an Orthodontic Consultation prior to any treatment being carried out. In this consultation, your teeth, mouth, and smile will be thoroughly assessed and examined. The dentist will then help you to select the most appropriate treatment that is suitable for your teeth and lifestyle
There are two main types of orthodontic treatment available:
Clear Aligners. These are the most inconspicuous of all the treatments. They usually take anything from 3 to 24 months to complete treatment; the average time is 15 months. However, you usually do not need as many adjustment appointments and so do not need to visit the dentist as frequently. The treatment consists of wearing a sequence of aligners for regular intervals usually for 2 weeks. Thereafter you will need to change to the next aligner in the sequence until all aligners have been used up. For more information see Clear Aligners
Fixed Brace. This brace is fixed to your teeth with a Bracket & Wire Systems. The teeth have a “bracket” that is bonded to the outside surface or the inside surface of the teeth. These brackets then hold various types of wires that then move the teeth in different ways. Although not as inconspicuous as the Clear Aligners, we use tooth-colored products so that they are more hidden than the metal train track type braces would be. The treatment lasts anything from 3 to 9 months; the average time is 6 month. Hence, some systems are branded e.g. Six Month Smiles. You will need to regularly visit the dentist and attend the surgery for adjustments to your braces - usually every 4 weeks. For more information see Fixed Braces
Removable Braces. These are more commonly used in children’s dentistry. These are made up of an acrylic base with special wires and other components attached to it. These types of braces move the teeth in specific ways and are very commonly used when more significant bite changes are required. In some instances fixed braces may not be the ideal solution, this is when a Removable Braces treatment will be selected. However, it is important to note that many also call Clear Aligners a Removable Brace as they too can be taken out of the mouth. More.
Other Braces. There are many other styles of braces that are specifically designed to perform a certain function. These appliances are usually restricted to more complex treatment where we are correcting the bite or performing facial alignments and/or jaw surgery. However, if you require any other type of orthodontic or teeth straightening treatment then your dentist will advise you accordingly based upon your assessment. More.
All adults will be fitted with a Fixed Retainer.
In all instances, regardless of which treatment type is selected, all adults will be fitted with a Fixed Retainer. This will help to maintain your treatment and prevent any relapse from occurring. In some instances, you may be recommended to wear a Removable Retainer as well.
