What To Expect When Getting Veneers

How long does it take?

With porcelain veneers, the entire treatment process can take a minimum of three appointments, including your consultation.

That said, depending on the brand, most applications can be completed in two visits unless opting for composite veneers, which only take one appointment to complete. See more.

Step 1: Comprehensive Assessment

At your first appointment, it is essential that your dentist looks at the health of your teeth and gums and understands your goals for your ideal smile. We will carry out a comprehensive evaluation that includes a periodontal assessment, x-rays and a soft tissue evaluation. Plus a “face bow record” to carry out an occlusion (bite) assessment.

  • Decipher if you have any fundamental issues that need addressing before cosmetic work can begin.
  • We will discuss the type of suitable veneers and how many veneers are necessary to achieve your desired look.

Our digital smile design software will show you a preview of your smile makeover so you can see what the finished result will look like before proceeding.

Step 2: “The Trial Smile”

If necessary, the cosmetic dentist may decide to remove a thin layer of your tooth enamel before veneers are fitted.

Depending on the type of veneers, some teeth may not need any tooth preparation, such as Lumineers or Ultrathin veneers, which are bonded directly to the tooth.

Whilst we wait for your veneers to be handcrafted to your specifications by a professional ceramist, we will construct temporary restorations and spend a great deal of time and effort to create nicely shaped teeth in the desired colour — this allows you to assess the changes we want to bring about in the final veneer fitting.

Step 3: Review & Fit

On this visit, we need your views on the following:

  • Colour /  Shape /  Comfort
  • Accuracy of bite / Speech

It will take up to three weeks for the final restoration to be made. When they’re ready, the trial smile is carefully removed, and the new restoration will be tested for accuracy of fit and colour.

Our dentists can make any final minor changes to the shape (e.g., the length and “pointedness” of your canine teeth).

Once the patient is happy with the outlook, an impression of the approved temporaries and further photographs are taken – this provides information for our Master Ceramist Technician to create individual handmade porcelain restorations.

Step 5: The Final Review Visit

1-7 days after the fitting appointment.

We want to carefully check your bite and appearance and ensure you are comfortable and happy with your new smile.

Final photographs of your new smile are taken at this visit.

“I am so scared of needles that I can’t even get through a blood test without passing out, but the team made sure I was comfortable and happy throughout that I was absolutely fine and plus it didn’t hurt a bit.”
