Can my new veneers lose their whiteness or stain through coffee of wine? What to be careful of.

Types of Stains

Two types of staining exist: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic Staining

  1. Occurs when the veneer absorbs food colouring and changes permanently. More common with composite veneers.
  2. As composite veneers age, they may change in colour due to tooth wear.
  3. Composite veneers tend to pick up colouring from various foods and drink like curries and red wine.
  4. Indirect composite veneers made in the laboratory tend not to pick up as much staining.

If you are trying to avoid discolouration and staining of your veneers, we recommend opting for porcelain, which will not change in shape or colour over time.

Extrinsic Staining (surface stains)

  • Usually occurs with everyday uses like tea, coffee, red wine, and curries. It can also occur in smokers.
  • Any high gloss finished veneer will not stain in this way.
  • Excessive texturing on the surface of both composite and porcelain veneers can pick up this kind of stain.

Whitening veneers

Sadly, dental veneers do not respond well to tooth whitening or bleaching agents, and stains or discolouration are difficult to remove without replacing the veneer entirely.

However, bear in mind that porcelain veneers are resistant to staining but will discolour over time from prolonged exposure to beverages like tea and coffee. If possible try and drink from a straw to limit exposure.

However, in the case of composite veneers, our dentists can polish them to brighten their appearance – but it will depend on the level of staining.
