Keeping your veneers fresh

The beauty of dental veneers is that they require very little care to stay perfect, mostly because they are highly resistant to staining and decay.

But that doesn’t mean they’re indestructible.

Instead, patients should remember that whilst they’re strong, they should not bite down on anything that might cause their veneers to chip, for example, a pen.

Just like your natural teeth, you’ll need to be careful and mindful of certain habits to keep your veneers perfect, and conditions like bruxism (tooth grinding) can be fatal to the survival of your veneers.

Preventing chips and breaks

Patients should understand that even though veneers are made of solid porcelain, they are not always strong enough to prevent cracks or chips from accidents or injury.

And whilst veneers require no special care or maintenance (treat them like regular teeth), patients must carefully preserve them as best as possible to boost their longevity.

The type of veneer you get also depends on its strength. For example, opting for composite veneers means that patients will need to be more careful, as composite is more susceptible to chips, breaks and stains compared to porcelain. That said, composite veneers are much more easily repaired than porcelain.

If in the rare chance your veneers do chip or fall off, they’ll most likely need replacing as repairing porcelain is very difficult. If the veneer falls off, we might be easily to recement it pack into place. However, in the case of chips and breaks it will be better to replace the veneer entirely.

The best aftercare steps to care for your veneers

The same work required to maintain natural teeth is required for veneers, like brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, using one of the interdental brushes and, if suggested, an interspace brush.

Patients who suffer from tooth grinding are also recommended to prevent the wear and erosion of the veneers. Smoking is also discouraged to help you avoid discolouring the porcelain.

You should also be aware of the frequency of sugar in your diet to reduce the chances of gum disease and erosion.

Visiting the dentist regularly will allow the dentist to detect any early signs of trouble or disorders, which can be dealt with before more severe threats or issues occur, risking the failure of your veneers.
