A new study published in the journal of Dental Hypotheses suggests that the human form of mad cow disease could be linked to tooth decay. It suggests further that tooth decay may be the way in which people become infected with the incurable disease as a result of eating contaminated meat.

The study’s hypothesis could also explain the geographical spread of the disease where cases are higher in Scotland and the north east of England, where dental decay is also high.

An interesting observation was that the area with the lowest numbers of filled teeth and the lowest incidence of the human form of mad cow disease is the West Midlands, which is also the region with the highest levels of fluoridation.

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay also known as dental decay or caries, is a destruction of your tooth substance to form holes. These holes then need to be cleaned out and filled.

What is the cause of tooth decay?

There are millions of bacteria present in everyone’s mouth that stick to your teeth as plaque. These bacteria use the sugar in food and drinks to produce acid. This acid gradually dissolves the hard tooth structure to produce a cavity or hole. Fluoride in toothpastes, mouthwashes and drinking water inhibits the bacterial action.
